This year we are once again exclusively supporting breast cancer charity The Haven in our fundraising efforts.
The Haven provides the Haven programme free of charge to anyone affected by breast cancer. The programme includes counselling, complementary therapies, emotional support and practical information to help with the physical and emotional impact of breast cancer before, during and after medical treatment. The Haven also provides free counselling to family members.
Miss Leeds 2010 raised over £2,800 for The Haven, helping them to continue to provide care and support to those affected by breast cancer in the Yorkshire region.
The Haven was founded by Sara Davenport in 1997. The idea for the charity came following the experience of her children’s nanny, Wendy Ricketts, who was diagnosed with the illness. Sara was concerned by the lack of emotional support and information available to people with breast cancer. Believing that “no-one should have to face breast cancer alone”, Sara sold her art business and put all of her energy into creating The Haven. There are now 3 Havens; in London, Hereford and Yorkshire (Leeds).
The Yorkshire Haven – located at The Gateway complex on East Street/Crown Point Road – has been open since October 2008. During this time, the charity has welcomed and cared for over 860 Visitors – and one man – from Yorkshire and beyond.
Every year 45,500 women in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer – that’s 125 a day. In Yorkshire alone, nearly 5,000 women are diagnosed each year.
The Haven provides a place – quite literally a Haven – where anyone affected by breast cancer can find the comfort and care they need to support them and their families through this very difficult time. Our aim is to help anyone with breast cancer achieve the best possible quality of life.
